❤ DEAR TRESSBUZZ ❤
THIS WEEK'S BURNING QUESTION

Dear Tressbuzz,    I keep reading about protein/moisture balance but it seems confusing to me.  What exactly is that?  -Fossella

Dear Fossella,   Protein/moisture balance simply refers to maintaining a balance between strength and moisture in your hair.  It is one of the most important aspects of length retention in African American hair.  Hair is protein.  Many of the things we do to our hair - relaxers, extreme heat tools, poor diet, etc. - can lead to the breakdown of hair's internal protein structure.  Maintaining protein levels in hair can be done by refraining from or limiting damaging processes and by incorporating a scheduled protein treatment.  Remember, however, no amount of protein treatments are going to do a thing if you are regularly doing more damage than good.  Moisture levels must be maintained in Black hair above all else.  Our hair's tendency toward dryness and brittleness must be addressed on a regular basis.  This can be done through the incorporation of a water-based moisturizer applied as needed.  Remember, water is moisture.  Silicone and grease are not moisture.  I often use straight water sealed with oil as my moisturizer.  Once moisture levels are adequately established then strength through protein can be incorporated periodically.  This is where the balancing act comes in as protein overload can lead to hard/brittle/breaking hair.  A rule of thumb is to start protein at once a month then add or subtract as needed.  To keep an eagle eye on the amount of proteins you are getting check your products against my HIDDEN PROTEINS list.  Hair in protein overload (hard/brittle) or moisture overload (stretchy) is not balanced so if you find yourself in one of these conditions clarify the hair and take steps in the opposite direction ASAP.
